everyday is a blessing

Indeed. It is said that life is like a mist. It can disappear at any time. Such thought can make me feel shiver. What if God will take me now? Will I 'live happily ever after' in heaven?

'Todos los santos', 'Araw ng mga patay', Halloween or All saints day is fast approaching. That would be two days from now. Here in my country, it is celebrated with so much thoughtfulness and anticipation. Every November 1, people go to various cemetery to visit their dead loved ones. They bring food and drinks and surely reunite with relatives and long time friends who visit at the same time. It is an occasion that you will see old faces you've missed. Everybody is busy with career, family and business so, it's really a chance to meet them as everybody takes slow and sit for a moment to recall all the family and relatives who have already passed over to the other side.

I recall, when I was young, my friends and I go to the cemetery every Nov. 1. If not together, we would just agree to meet at a certain spot, mostly at the grave of someone we know. We would light a candle and from there we roam to other graves and do the same. Many of our friends, relatives and acquaintances would offer food-"kakanin" as we fondly call it and known to be the kind of food prepared for the occasion. Sometimes, we would also hop houses of our classmates. It was my joyful recollection of All Saints/Souls Day.

As of the latter time, the grave of my lola Meling and my cousin Ate Cat were among the 'must be' graves to visit. My lola nursed me when I was young while my Ate Cat had been with us in most family occasions. I have happy thoughts of them and they will always remain in my memory.

This coming November 1, I want to visit Brod Toto Erle. He died 11 years ago in Iligan. The news came to us in MSU Gen. Santos while we were waiting to march for our graduation. We were shocked about his passing. The brods and sis who knew the incident gathered together at his wake. After that I wasn't able to visit him. We were roommates in the dormitory during our second year college. One time we discussed about death and who will be saved. There were things we didn't agree. He said that we will just know it when we die. Funny how we ended our discussion. In my mind a thought plays perhaps he now know the answer to our questions.

Death is certain. We don't know the time when and where we will meet our Creator. I've shared to Brod Erle this verse in the Bible : For God so love the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 I have memorized this verse by heart. It makes all the difference in my life. Knowing that God is there, I'm sure that Jesus died for me and paid all my sins.

May this Halloween be not only an ordinary passing of event but a reminder that we are all like mist in the air. Anytime we can go to the other side. Be ready!

Global warming: A Threat to Life

Have you heard of global warming? I'm sure you did. Do you understand what is it? Well, it is the warming of our planet. Wonder why?

This has made me to investigate further for if indeed it will affect our lives, it is one question we have to give importance. Not only that, we are already experiencing its effects. We just don't notice or know that it is already global warming.

Global warming is the measurable increases in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses. Scientists believe Earth is currently facing a period of rapid warming brought on by rising levels of heat-trapping gases, known as greenhouse gases, in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Greenhouse gases retain the radiant energy (heat) provided to Earth by the Sun in a process known as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases occur naturally, and without them the planet would be too cold to sustain life as we know it. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-1700s, however, human activities have added more and more of these gases into the atmosphere. For example, levels of carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas, have risen by 35 percent since 1750, largely from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. With more greenhouse gases in the mix, the atmosphere acts like a thickening blanket and traps more heat.

The result: The melting of polar ice caps causing ocean levels to rise flooding coastal areas. It could also affect weather patterns causing, among other problems, prolonged drought or increased flooding in some of the world's leading agricultural regions.

In our own little way, we can help solve this problem. Let us preserve and plant more trees. We should spread awareness in our society about reduction of greenhouse gases emission. The use of plant derived fuels like ethanol and biodiesel should be encouraged. Working out a plan to promote energy-saving fluorescent light bulbs instead of less-efficient incandescent light bulbs is beneficial.

Our institution, during anniversary celebration has promoted tree planting activities all over the country. Here in Koronadal City, more than two months ago, we did it in Brgy. Carpenter Hill. Last year, we planted more seedlings in Bentung Sulit, Polomolok. It was a simple, funny yet worthy and united activity for Mother Earth… saving lives.

Lake Sebu, Like No Other

The cool breeze of the air, the fascinating view, the simplicity of life, the unique culture of its people – they all make Lake Sebu an interesting place to visit in Mindanao. Located in a mountainous part of South Cotabato, the place became the top tourist destination especially during summer. Being there, you can relax and unwind away from the complexities of city life. Because of the cool climate, the rooms for rent are naturally cold. Flowering plants are flourishing and you can see them in bright, glowing colors. The placid lake and the mountains from afar create a beautiful backdrop for pictorials. There are Jeepneys and Vans for hire to send you to venues where you want to stay. Accommodation is not a problem because it's affordable. Getting there is easy as the roads are already concrete. From Koronadal, we travelled passing by Banga and Surallah for about an hour and a half. There are some locals who offer hand made accessories for souvenir. Some ethnic groups perform their traditional songs and dances. Last year, our branch planning became special simply because we made Lake Sebu as our venue. We stayed at the Hidden Garden and enjoyed native and tilapia dishes. After our planning session, we never missed out taking pictures and sight seeing. Due to time constraint, we were not able to visit the seven falls. It will surely be a reason to go back in Lake Sebu on a different occasion because Lake Sebu is a place like no other.

Breaking Far

Visiting Thailand was one of the trips I am so grateful. It did not only let me experience to sojourn in a foreign land for the very first time but it also opened an opportunity for me to see the bigger picture of the world and the bigger picture of my family tree.
It was my first time to wander in a place of different culture, language and beliefs, my first time to see and ride a real elephant, my first time to eat dragon fruit, my first time to travel internationally, my first time to see a real tiger, my first time to see a tamed crocodile and so many firsts. I am amused to hear people greet "sawadikap" or "sawadika" everytime they see each other. Such gesture was a sign of respect. I've met some new friends and acquaintance too from different places.
Indeed, the world was bigger than I perceived it to be. Far from my native land was a different world, having a different currency - Thailand Baht, a left traffic orientation and a monarchy. Dawn, my niece and I visited some of their tourist attractions - floating market where traders exchange goods in the river, samphran elephant ground where elephants dance, play soccer and entertain tourists, King's park where families can gather and enjoy the scenic landscape. We watched a colorful cultural presentation showcasing Thailand's culture and traditions and a thrilling crocodile show. Thailand is a progressive country. It has lots of infrastructures and it's keeping pace with technology.
More important than any other things, I have met some of my relatives for the first time - Ate Evelyn, my cousin is working together with her sister Ate Erlyn in an Adventist International School. They had with them their immediate family allowing me to meet my nieces and nephews personally. They are well-educated and doing good in school. I met Ranjan, Ate Evelyn's husband. He is a good family man and has raised his family close together.
Time was so short for a very interesting vacation. We bid farewell but my travel has given me a wonderful experience that I will always reminisce in my memory. It was a realization of my dream to have a break in a different country and yes, dreams do come true.

Brod Jeff’s Birthday Bash

We celebrated Brod Jeff's 27^th birthday at Agua Frio Garden Resort last Sept. 25, 2008. It was a day late to his actual birthday which is Sept. 24. It was a happy occasion where our small group here in Koronadal had gathered once again and bonded with each other. It was also an opportunity to meet some new friends from Gen. Santos – Pie and Gerson. They were amiable and fun to be with. Present in the occasion were Sis Tere, Sis Mafe, Brod Tim, Dennis, Sheila, Brod Jeff, Joy and I.

Agua Frio is a 5-minute ride away from the boarding house of my Brod. We get there by a tricycle. It has a swimming pool and cottages just right for what we needed – a place for our simple get-together. It was already dark when we arrived there. At first, I thought the weather will prevent us from having a good time but fortunately the gloomy sky turned fine. We had our dinner after few minutes setting up the table. We played basketball in the pool where a ring stands at the middle. It was a lot of fun and excitement. It gave us the feeling that there's a child inside of us.
Brod Jeff and Joy had spent together in the pool for a while making most of the moments to last. The birthday boy had so much fun and were so blessed of him because he is really a nice guy.
Thanks brod for always being there for us! I'm happy 'coz you always find time that we can be together with our brothers and sisters. You have done a great job. Thank you for making us a part of your life. Just remember that we are always here for you in times of need. Happy Birthday Brod Jeff! I wish all the best for you. Take Care!

Friendship never ends

College days have gone past. But they are important part of my present. I'm glad because even today is entirely different from yesterday, I can recall great memories to last a lifetime, most especially of my friends who happened to be my classmates in the university where I studied, in Mindanao State University.

They are Stephanny & Miguel. They invited me last Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 in the baptismal of their unica hija, Chachi in St. Michael Church in Gen. Santos City. It was a great day of reuniting after long years of not seeing each other. I'm so happy for them because they have made it to be together and now having a child to rear. I know their story as both of them were close to me since then. We started on the same ground in preparing for our careers. We have shared in times when our pockets were empty and our subjects were difficult.

Tough time flies, it's as if nothing had changed the way we treat each other, so warm and very cordial. We are still same friends who share so many things about life. The topics may be different but the concern is there.

Friends are always friends no matter how far the distance and how time keeps turning. I feel so blessed because I was given true friends like them. Surely, circumstances may change but one thing for sure our friendship will never end. It will just add and relationships will be strengthened. Congratulations Kumpareng Miguel and Kumareng Fanny! May you guide Chachi to be the best that she can be with your fervent prayers. For Chachi, I wish her success in her life now that she is christened.

Tough Times

My family is experiencing difficulties right now, with the confinement of my older sister in the hospital. Aside from financial concerns, we are disturbed of her condition as she was diagnosed of Diabetes Ketoacidosis resulting to metabolic imbalance affecting nerves and microcirculation. She exhibited pre-coma conditions. Fortunately, she was transferred to another hospital in Gen. Santos City where she was examined and treated immediately. After few hours, she regained consciousness and was able to communicate with us. We were surprised of her recovery. We were informed that there were some mistakes the way she was handled in the previous hospital, perhaps due to limited knowledge of the former doctor about her condition. However, such practice was so disappointing. I could think a lot of things and persons to blame. That includes my sister who was not responsible for her actions when we were informed that she ate the prohibited foods relating to her disorder. But blaming wouldn't help.

Tough times come when you least expect it. What hurts me most is the fact that my senior citizen parents have been disturbed. But parents are parents. This has made me proud of them because when they should be enjoying their later years, they are still supportive to us particularly to my sick sibling. I pray that God will continue to touch their lives because without them, who will give the same care only parents can offer?
